In order to make sure that your WebQuest stays aligned with your unit, you will need to copy and paste 3 things from your Stages 1 and 2 from your unit for Dr. Grace's class. (This will also help Dr. Theresa give you better feedback on your Intro, Task, and Conclusion.) Then you will write your first drafts of your Introduction and Conclusion.

Introduction:

The Smithsonian was founded in 1846 and has grown into a complex of 19 museums and 1 zoo. This is the largest museum complex in the world. It staffs more than six thousand people but is still looking for one more person. With the sixtieth anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States approaching, we look to the past for the experiences and hardships of the oppressed who rose above racism and discrimination to aid our future. The events of Civil Rights Movement were transformative for the 60's, nonviolent activists were met with violence and jail sentences but overcame everything to have their voice heard.

"I have a dream that one day right there in Alabama little black boys and little black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers." -Martin Luther King Jr.

(Set the stage, give us any background info that we might need to know (but just a hint), this is your HOOK. Provide a segue to the Task . . . make your reader want to click to the next section. There should be nothing that sounds like school work in this section. Don't give away what's going to happen in the Task.)

Task:

The Civil Rights Movement Museum is set to open soon, but The Smithsonian still needs one more web exhibit for their website to amp up their digital presence. This is where you come in as an up and coming museum curator. You will create an exhibit about an event that happened during the Civil Rights Movement. You will submit the plans as an iBook to The Smithsonian Board of Trustees. They are looking for innovative ways to depict your chosen event. If the board picks your entry, you will be honored at the opening night of the museum where you will be receiving a medal and will gain international fame.

(This story should match the Task Description/Summary from your unit in Stage 2 (Through what authentic performance task will students demonstrate understandings?). You can copy and paste from Dr. Grace's wiki. Tell the story of the Role, Audience, Situation, and Product & Performance. Be a story teller. Save any classroom-specific information for the Process. Build the scenario and stay in character. You can reference the Introduction but try not to duplicate the information that's in the Introduction. Be sure to write this in second person ("you work for an international design firm" "you and your colleagues at the television studio" "your team wants to submit the winning entry"...))

Conclusion:

Your submission will be reviewed by the board here at the Smithsonian, if chosen you will be in contact to congratulate you and to make travel plans. Historic events connect to each other and influence other decisions in the future. The events of the Civil Rights Movement strike a chord in America's contemporary history, will race ever not divide America?

(Tie everything the participants have done back to the Goal. Why did they go through all of this? Tie the scenario to the real world. Remind them of the "Big Idea" that they were supposed to gain from this, just in case they didn't make the connection on their own. Don't get preachy. If you ask a question here, it has to be rhetorical. No work or assignments should be included. Short is good.)
